Jim Hadorn of Tulsa, Oklahoma formed the
Oklahoma Harness Horse Association (OHHA) in 1992 to promote education,
activities, and competitions for those who would work horses in harness. Jim
served as president until the first official slate of officers was elected for
the year 1998. at that time, the club made Jim an honorary lifetime member.
Membership has increased from six original members to over 50 members. Most
members reside in Oklahoma, but there are also members from Kansas, Texas,
Missouri, and Nebraska.

The OHHA meets monthly and educational programs are held in conjunction with most meetings. To accommodate members from various geographic areas, meetings are held in different parts of the state(s), and locations are published well in advance on the club's website and email group list.
OHHA members drive a variety of animals that include minis, ponies, drafts, draft crosses, Morgans, warmbloods, Saddlebreds, Standardbreds, and Quarter Horses. Some members are active in breed shows, e.g., Welsh pony and Morgan. We have drivers competing with singles and pairs. Members range in driving experience from wanting to drive to Deryn Stewart who has been on the USET Driving long list.
In an effort to educate its members, OHHA sponsors world class clinicians. Larry Poulin was the first driving clinician to come to Oklahoma, and Larry was here annually for 5 years. Lisa Singer has been a regular clinician for a number of years. Recently Becky Benjamin and Deryn Stewart donated their time to train members at a benefit clinic held in Stillwater, OK.
Every summer the OHHA puts on the Cowboy Country Pleasure Driving Show at the Payne County Expo Center in Stillwater Oklahoma. This event has been held since 1998. The show is sponsored by the Payne County Expo Center and organized by Andy and Georgiana Kincaid. This year's show has added youth classes, log pulls, and antique farm implement classes. This is in addition to the traditional ground driving classes (great for new drivers), turnout class, reinsmanship, and obstacle classes. There are divisions for singles, multiples, ponies, miniatures, light horses, and draft horses. Admission is free for spectators and volunteers are always welcome!
The club also hosts Arena Driving Trials
(ADT) throughout the year. An ADT is similar to a
Combined Driving Event except the three
phases are held all on one day in an arena. The driving trial begins with each
driver taking a driven dressage test. Then the dressage markers are taken down
and the hazards (obstacles) are set
up. The
drivers compete against the clock to achieve the fastest time through the
course. Finally the drivers take on the cones course. The fastest time with the
least penalties wins that section. Many club members have used the ADTs as a
stepping stone to advance onto bigger Combined Driving Events.
The crowning event of the year is the club's annual CDE that is held in October. The club's CDE started as a recognized ADS Driving trial in 1996. In 1998 it was moved up to a two day CDE that offered Training and Preliminary levels. In 2000 an intermediate section was added. These events were hosted by Brenda Smolen at the 640 acre Pond Ridge Farm in Okmulgee, OK. In 2003 the CDE was relocated to the Payne County Expo Center in Stillwater, OK. The CDE has since been renamed the Cowboy Country CDE due to its proximity to the Oklahoma State University campus.
The change in venue is a huge undertaking. Trails have to be cleared and obstacles have to be built. Every weekend club members are out in force building the new course. Please visit our CDE page to learn more about this event.
